The process of precisely calculating the cargo tank volume to ascertain the precise cargo or products, whether in liquid or solid form, is known as ship cargo calibration. The act of gathering data for a cargo tank and using those measurements to calculate an accurate tank capacity is known as ship tank calibration. The liquid depth in a tank is called “sounding,” and it is determined by measuring the liquid’s surface to a point at the bottom of the tank; commonly known as Ship Sounding Survey. Ships may need sounding tables or ullage survey reports in order to load or discharge items as part of cargo tank calibrations. Internal Electro-Optical Distance Ranging Method (EODR) by 3D laser scanning supported by our advanced software is required where Cargo tanks undergo major repair/alterations. After Barge/Vessel tank calibrations, our deliverables are ullage tables and sounding tables with calibration charts.

The ullage method refers to the measurement of the distance (i.e., the space) between the liquid’s surface and the top of the inner surface of a tank. Ullage tables are located on the ships. These tables are produced in relation to a tank’s interior volume as measured from a reference point. The sounding method is the opposite of the Ullage method. This approach involves measuring the distance between various reference points at the tank’s bottom and the liquid’s surface to determine the depth of a tank of liquid.

The volume of liquid cargo, such as crude oil, petroleum products, chemicals, and similar products loading or discharging on tanker ships, is determined by using the ullage survey method. It is, in short, a weight calculation method. Based on measuring the empty space above the cargo in the tanks and performing basic static calculations, this method is used. By using the ullage survey, the ship’s cargo weight is easily determined by advanced 3D Scanning technology.
